Course Notes

How will this course benefit me?
This is a one day course suitable for complete beginners; and will give you a basic taster of how to paint a flower in watercolour.

What are the entry requirements?
An interest in learning to draw and paint flowers.
Botanical illustration is a precise and detailed discipline. Therefore it is important to
have excellent eyesight, good eye to hand coordination, and observational skills.

What will I learn?
This is a structured course. Learners will be looking a particular flower or plant (these will be supplied on the day depending on what is available) and will be given instruction on how to draw accurately and how to use watercolour to complete a small painting.
(Please note: this should be seen as a session to learn skills and there is no guarantee that a painting will be completed at the end of the 5 hours.)

How will the course be delivered?
Demonstration, practical work, one-to-one, group work and discussions. Teaching will be on a one to one or small group basis, to enable learners to progress at their own pace.Learners will be expected to follow the course programme to ensure progression

How will my learning be assessed?
You will receive regular verbal feedback from your tutor, who will assess you continually and informally. At the end of the session work will be displayed for a critique. Learners need not participate in this if they do not wish to.

What are the extra costs?
You will need to bring your own equipment and materials. Most watercolour boxes have several of the colours needed but you will need more reds and purples. Please check that you have these basic essential watercolours:
Lemon yellow
Aureolin (can only be purchased as artist quality, it is not in the student range)
Cadmium yellow
French ultramarine
Cobalt blue
Permanent rose
Scarlet lake
Winsor violet
Other equipment:
White pallettes
Cloth or kitchen roll
Plastic or putty rubber
An HB pencil
A sheet of good quality watercolour paper, ie Sanders Waterford, Arches, fabriano. Please buy a 'not' surface only buy HP if you are used to working on it. Bockingford is not suitable for this course as it is hard to work on.
One good sable brush, I use a number 4 da vinci maestro series 11. Or Billy Showell's number 2 or 4 which can be purchased directly from her website, the SAA or from Amazon.
If you have never painted before or do not wish to buy too much equipment some basic equipment can purchased for a small additional fee. Please contact the tutor Lesley Smith at the Institute at least two weeks before the course begins to arrange this.

What can I progress to next?
On completion of the course you could progress to the full botanical illustration course here at the institute.

Health and Safety requirements?
You will need to follow the tutor's instructions on Health and safety procedures.
