How will this course benefit me?
The level 3 Diploma for the children's workforce aims to provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills of caring for children from birth to 5. By the end of the course you should have competence to work towards Early Years Educator status; this is possible if you pass all units and have a grade A-C in both English and maths GCSE or a Functional Skills level 2 equivalent.

What are the entry requirements?
" Spoken and written English at Level 2
" Enthusiasm and a desire to learn.
" A willingness to participate in class discussion and activities and commit to personal study
" The time and commitment necessary to complete a portfolio of evidence and maintain attendance of at least 90%
" A voluntary or paid work placement where you are able to work with three different age groups
" An interview is required before enrolment

What will I learn?
The course consists of 23 mandatory units with 460 hours of classroom teaching. You are expected to carry out a work placement for the duration of your course in three different settings for a total of no less than 400 hours. The work placements must cover the following age ranges: birth to 1 year and 11 months; 2 years to 2 years 11 months and 3 to 5 years.

How will the course be delivered?
Presentations, tutor lead discussion, Q and A, written pieces of work - some personal research and class room presentation as well as home study.

How will my learning be assessed?
You must produce written and practical evidence of your achievement by completing a portfolio; you will be also observed in your work placement. Written tasks must be produced for each unit and will be no less than 1500 words in length each. You must expect to do no less than five hours study per week outside of the classroom. You will be observed in your workplace six times.

What are the extra costs?
If you intend to take up a placement you may need to pay the cost of a DBS check or any additional associated costs.

What can I progress to next?
You should be able to apply directly for work in early years; you can also work towards completion of your Maths and English GCSE or functional skills if you don't already have these.
