Course Notes

If you are interested in community interpreting then this is the course for you. It is the first step towards training and will introduce you to the basic concepts of community interpreting including the role community interpreting in assisting communities to access services and awareness of the provision of public services in the local area. It will introduce you to opportunities for a career in community interpreting by exploring the settings where interpreters may be required to work. It will prepare you for progression onto the Level 2 Award in Community Interpreting.

What are the entry requirements?
Enthusiasm and a desire to learn
Fluent in English and another language
An interest in the subject and a willingness to take an active part in the class
The time and commitment necessary to complete a portfolio of evidence and maintain attendance of at least 90%
An interview is essential for this course

What will I learn?
You will gain basic knowledge and skills of community interpreting including the role of codes of practice and the settings where interpreters may be required to work.

How will the course be delivered?
A mixture of taught sessions, workshops, discussions and presentations. This is an interactive course and you should be prepared to participate in group work, discussions and presentations.

How will my learning be assessed?
You will complete a portfolio of evidence showing how you meet the qualification criteria. This might include written assignments, reports, projects, and class notes.

What can I progress to next?
This qualification supports progression onto Level 2 Award in Community Interpreting. It may also be possible to progress onto other vocational qualifications if these are more suited to your career prospects.
