How will this course benefit me?
You will develop skills and knowledge in counselling that may be useful in a variety of helping relationships and professions. You will be able to practise some simple counselling techniques in a safe and supportive environment. It may help you progress into higher level Counselling courses or make a useful complement for other personal

What are the entry requirements?
An interview is essential for this course
Excellent spoken and written English is essential, to at least Level 2
A willingness to participate in class discussion and activities and commit to personal study
The time and commitment necessary to complete a portfolio of evidence and maintain attendance of at least 90%

What will I learn?
The basic concepts of counselling and the skills needed in formal and informal interactions including
Using counselling skills
Introduction to a range of counselling skills theories
Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills

How will the course be delivered?
A mixture of workshops, discussions, presentations and practical sessions. There is a strong practical element and learners will be expected to participate in discussions and workshops including counselling triads. You should expect to commit to 2- 3 hours a week on personal research and homework.

How will my learning be assessed?
You will complete a portfolio of evidence showing how you meet the qualification criteria set by NCFE. This might include peer and tutor assessment, learning logs, reports and presentations, tutor observation and/ or video recording

What can I progress to next?
For those interested in following a professional route into counselling we recommend the Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills or, after sufficient experience, the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. You might also consider other related vocational areas such as Substance Misuse, Mental Health, Teaching Assistant or Adult Social Care qualifications, Mentoring or Life Coaching, or our extensive range of short personal development courses such as Assertiveness or our programme of intensive 1-day CPD courses.
