How will this course benefit me?
This Gateway course will give you a basic understanding of the knowledge and the skills needed to care for young children. The course provides a useful introduction to the early years setting and may help towards gaining employment in the field. It is suitable for those just starting their early years careers and supports progression onto further childcare qualifications.


What are the entry requirements?
Spoken and written English - at least to Entry Level 3
Enthusiasm and a desire to learn.
An interest in the subject and a willingness to take an active part in the class
The time and commitment necessary to complete a portfolio of evidence and maintain attendance of at least 90%
An interview is essential for this course

What will I learn?
An introduction to caring for children and best practice in early years settings including:
1. The value of play for babies and young children
2. Roles and responsibilities in the early years setting
3. The management and organisation of an early years setting
4. The opportunity to reflect on your personal skills and develop a personal action plan.

How will the course be delivered?
A mixture of workshops, discussions, presentations and practical sessions.

How will my learning be assessed?
You will complete a portfolio of evidence showing how you meet the qualification criteria. This might include peer and tutor assessment, learning logs, reports and tutor observation.

What are the extra costs?
If you intend to take up a placement you may need to pay the cost of a DBS check or any additional associated costs.

What can I progress to next?
This qualification supports progression onto Level 2 Childcare, Level 2 Teaching Assistant and other Level 2 vocational courses such as Counselling and Mentoring. You may also be interested in our flexible learning courses: Level 2 Autism Awareness, Learning Disability, Information, Advice and Guidance; or you may wish to study maths and English to a higher level.
