How will this course benefit me?
This course will introduce you to basic counselling skills which can be useful in a variety of professional contexts. You will gain an insight into the nature of counselling work and other helping roles such as mentoring and life coaching. This qualification supports progression onto the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and other Level 2 vocational courses.
What are the entry requirements?
Enthusiasm and a desire to learn
An interest in the subject and a willingness to take an active part in the class
The time and commitment necessary to complete a portfolio of evidence and maintain attendance of at least 90%
What will I learn?
Basic counselling skills needed in formal and informal interactions
An introduction to a range of counselling skills theories
How to use counselling skills ethically in a helping environment
How will the course be delivered?
A mixture of workshops, discussions, presentations and practical sessions. There is a strong practical element and learners will be expected to participate in discussions and workshops including counselling triads.
How will my learning be assessed?
You will complete a portfolio of evidence showing how you meet the qualification criteria set by Gateway. This might include peer and tutor assessment, learning logs, reports and tutor observation.

For those interested in following a professional route into counselling we recommend the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills or the Level 2 Certificate in Mentoring. You might also consider other related vocational areas such as Substance Misuse, Mental Health, Teaching Assistant or Adult Social Care qualifications.
